Airbnb adds AI-powered search and social trip-planning tools

Airbnb is rolling out an AI-powered property search and new social features that let friends plan trips together, as part of a broader fall product update.

Airbnb is moving in two directions at once: on the ground, it’s adding more services to compete with hotels, and online, it’s leaning on AI and its social network to help travelers find places to stay. The company’s fall product update adds meal delivery, laundry, baby-gear rental, ski and boat rental in limited locations, and expanded grocery delivery to the app services it introduced last year.

The bigger change is AI search. Airbnb has moved cautiously on AI, with CEO Brian Chesky avoiding a chatbot-style interface; he first teased the new search feature earlier this year. Users can now toggle on a mode that lets them search for properties using text or voice prompts. Once a search begins, the interface surfaces dynamic filters based on the traveler’s preferences — typing “baby,” for instance, brings up filters like cribs, playgrounds, and children’s books and toys. Airbnb is also using AI to highlight relevant features of a listing, and will let users compare properties on their wish list through AI-generated summaries and reviews.

“It’s not hard to create AI search; it’s hard to create AI search in e-commerce when you have $100 billion going through your platform,” Chesky told TechCrunch. Anyone can build a basic search function, he said, but doing so without hurting conversion is the hard part.

Airbnb is also pushing further into social features designed to encourage more trips and bookings for extras like food tastings and craft workshops. The company let users connect with fellow travelers and friends on the platform starting last year; now travelers can view a map based on where their connections have traveled or plan to travel. Tapping a trip shows where a connection stayed and which experiences they booked, though users can opt out of sharing their own trip history. Airbnb is also building neighborhood pages, assembled from guest reviews and other sources, to help travelers discover where to eat and what to do nearby.

Why it matters

The push shows Airbnb betting that AI-assisted discovery and social proof — not just inventory — will differentiate it from hotel booking sites, even as it takes on hotels’ own service offerings.
