TikTok launches 'Must Eat' restaurant discovery guide

TikTok introduced a new feature called "Must Eat" on Wednesday that pulls more than 40 million posts and comments into a single, community-driven restaurant guide, starting in New York City, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

The feature puts TikTok more squarely into competition with Yelp and Google Maps, but it leans on what the app already does rather than copying their playbook of search results and star ratings: surfacing restaurant recommendations that spread organically through user videos. “Must Eat” lets people browse by city and filter by cuisine, price, rating and location, splitting results into two buckets — “Everyday Eats” for casual, neighborhood-favorite spots and “Elevated Dining” for celebrations and special occasions. Select restaurants can be booked directly inside TikTok through OpenTable.

The launch builds on a discovery role TikTok has played informally for years, where viral videos have already helped local restaurants pick up new customers; “Must Eat” formalizes that into a dedicated guide users can reach through the search bar, the Local feed, restaurant pages, or location tags attached to videos.

Why it matters

By converting years of organic food content into a structured, bookable guide, TikTok is positioning itself to capture restaurant-discovery traffic and revenue that currently flows to Yelp and Google — a test case for whether the same model extends to other local-recommendation categories.
