TikTok bans ad account for Elon Musk documentary
TikTok has permanently suspended the advertising account for the Elon Musk documentary "Musk," The Hollywood Reporter reports, after Meta and YouTube briefly rejected ads for the same film.
TikTok has permanently banned the advertising account for “Musk,” a four-hour documentary about Elon Musk, The Hollywood Reporter reports. The outlet says distributor Bleecker Street was told the ban was due to the account’s political content; TechCrunch has reached out to TikTok for comment.
It’s not the only platform resistance the film has faced. Meta and YouTube initially rejected ads for the trailer too, before allowing them — Meta blamed its rejection on “an error” — while X, which Musk owns, still refuses to carry any ads for the film.
TikTok’s own U.S. business is partly owned by Larry Ellison, a vocal supporter of President Donald Trump like Musk himself. Only four theaters showed “Musk” when it opened last weekend, and the release is expanding from there, with a run on HBO planned for next year — HBO now sits under Paramount/Skydance, led by Ellison’s son, David.
Why it matters
The saga shows how major platforms still treat advertising around Musk-linked content as a political minefield, and how ownership ties — like Larry Ellison’s stakes in both TikTok’s U.S. business and, through his son, HBO’s parent company — can shape which films and ads make it to audiences.
