Spotify turns its internal dev tools into an enterprise software business

Spotify launched technology.spotify.com on Thursday, formalizing years of selling internal developer tools like Backstage, Confidence, Portal, and Xirp to outside companies.

Spotify launched technology.spotify.com on Thursday, a new site that makes its internal engineering tools available to other companies and formalizes a business that’s actually been running for years. Spotify has offered pieces of its tech stack to the wider tech community since 2020, when it open-sourced Backstage, a platform for building developer portals. It has sold its software-experimentation platform Confidence since 2023 and its software-development platform Portal since 2024, and began selling Xirp, a tool for managing AI coding agents, earlier this year.

It’s somewhat unusual for a consumer-facing company like Spotify to sell its internal systems to other businesses, and Tyson Singer, Spotify’s SVP of Technology & Platform, acknowledged in a post on the company’s engineering site that the move raises an obvious question: why is Spotify selling software at all? “The truth is, the Spotify you know and love is more than a great streaming service. Behind our consumer app are hundreds of cross-functional squads shipping products and code day in, day out,” he wrote.

The new site will house the open-source and paid tools Spotify has built to support its own audience of 777 million monthly active users. Singer argued that while AI has made building this kind of software faster, it hasn’t made it simpler — the complexity, cost, and operational surface area all grow alongside it, he said. Spotify’s bet is that development teams will still need the kind of core services it sells, even as AI reshapes how software gets built, and the company says those tools will be “agent-ready.”

It’s still unclear how much revenue Spotify’s enterprise sales generate, since the company hasn’t broken out the figures in its financial reporting — something that could change as it pushes the business from a side project into a more formal operation. The technology site doesn’t list pricing; companies have to fill out a form to talk to sales.

Why it matters

Spotify is betting that AI coding tools will make developer infrastructure more complex, not less — a wager that could turn its internal engineering stack into a real second revenue line alongside streaming.
