Google's Pixel 11 Pro Fold: a sturdier update, not a rethink
Google's Pixel 11 Pro Fold brings a lighter design, a brighter 3,600-nit display, and triple the claimed durability, but otherwise mirrors last year's model at $1,899.
Google’s Pixel 11 Pro Fold carries over last year’s basic shape while trimming weight and reinforcing durability. The new model measures 5mm thick unfolded and 10.1mm folded, against 5.2mm and 10.8mm on the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, and is 19 grams lighter — differences that are easy to miss by feel alone. Google says the phone is three times more durable, crediting a glass-ceramic front cover paired with a glass-fiber composite back panel for the gain; the reviewer’s test unit came through several drops from a table and a pocket without a visible dent or scratch. A new olive finish rounds out the update, and the stiffer hinge still requires two hands to open.
The outer display is only slightly larger, but peak brightness climbs to 3,600 nits from 3,000 nits, making the screen easier to read in bright conditions. The fold crease remains clearly visible, especially in direct light, at a time when rivals such as Oppo and Honor have made theirs far less noticeable. On the back, a new HiLight indicator lights up for calls from favorite contacts and for hands-free sessions with Gemini. Multitasking still tops out at two apps side by side — floating “bubbles” can minimize an app into a taskbar for quick reference — and Gemini’s updates this cycle mostly expanded the existing Magic Cue suggestion feature rather than adding anything new.
The 48-megapixel main sensor carries over from last year, now paired with software that pushes Super Res Zoom to 30x from 20x, while the ultrawide and telephoto sensors are unchanged — leaving the Fold’s camera system behind the non-folding Pixel 11 Pro XL’s. New software features include Looks, which can shift an image’s tone with presets, and Magic Capture, which pulls the best frames out of a video.
The Pixel 11 Pro Fold costs $1,899 — barely less than Apple’s iPhone Duo, by about $100, and matches the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 on price — while the taller Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra starts at $2,099 in the U.S. Xiaomi and Honor are also preparing foldables for the European market, adding to an already crowded field.
Why it matters
With Apple’s iPhone Duo, Samsung’s wider Galaxy Z Fold 8 lineup, and upcoming foldables from Xiaomi and Honor all landing around the same price point, Google’s incremental update leaves it with less room to stand out in a foldables market that has suddenly gotten far more crowded.
