Z.ai revealed as the lab behind mysterious Ox Alpha model
Z.ai confirmed it is the lab behind Ox Alpha, an anonymously launched open-weight model that has topped benchmarks, and said it will release the model's weights Wednesday.
Over the weekend, speculation swirled over which AI lab was behind Ox Alpha, a mysterious new open-weight AI model launched anonymously on OpenRouter that quickly began topping benchmarks and leaderboards against the best models. As many had expected, Ox Alpha was spawned by GLM-maker Z.ai, according to Bloomberg. Z.ai confirmed that Ox Alpha is the newest iteration of its GLM series, which Hugging Face has used to defend itself against an attack from OpenAI agents.
The company said it will release Ox Alpha’s weights on Wednesday, after which developers can build on top of it. Z.ai describes Ox Alpha as “a reasoning model designed for coding, sustained agentic work, and production workloads,” suited for “long-horizon software engineering, complex reasoning, and workflows that combine text with visual context.”
The release adds to the growing threat of cheap, capable models from China that could take real market share from expensive frontier-model companies like OpenAI and Anthropic. Earlier this month, Z.ai released GLM-5.3, which the company says rivals Anthropic’s Fable 5 on certain benchmarks. TechCrunch has reached out to Z.ai for comment.
Why it matters
An anonymously launched model quietly topping leaderboards before its maker is even confirmed shows how quickly open-weight Chinese labs can now match frontier performance — undercutting the pricing power of US labs before they’ve had a chance to respond.
