Stripe's real reason for buying OpenRouter: "the singularity"
Stripe confirmed it is buying AI model-routing startup OpenRouter, in a deal reportedly worth $7.5 billion according to sources who spoke to the New York Times.
Stripe didn’t disclose the price, but the reported $7.5 billion figure is a steep jump from OpenRouter’s $1.3 billion valuation in May. Founders alone are reportedly set to receive $1.5 billion from the sale — more than the startup’s entire valuation just three months ago — with investors getting the remaining $6 billion, per the NYT. Stripe reportedly had to outbid other interested parties, including Databricks, to land the deal, which is expected to close in a few weeks.
The stated rationale, according to a leaked letter from Stripe’s founders to investors, is deceptively simple: “the singularity.” “It’s a fuzzy and perhaps already overworked term but we decided that January 1 marked the beginning of the singularity and we’ve been operating on that basis,” Patrick and John Collison wrote, in a letter published by Eric Newcomer and verified by TechCrunch. The term nods to the hypothetical point where humans and technology merge into something new — a tongue-in-cheek reference, as Patrick Collison had already signaled when he used it at his company’s conference in April.
More concretely, the founders pointed to customer overlap: “OpenRouter is exceptionally useful for any developer and Stripe is one of the world’s largest developer platforms,” they wrote, noting that 88% of the Forbes AI 50 and 100% of Brex’s fastest-growing startups already use Stripe. OpenRouter, which routes developer traffic between AI models, says it will keep operating independently after the deal closes, with its “product, mission, and current commitments” unchanged.
Most of Stripe’s largest acquisitions to date have focused on helping businesses collect and manage incoming cash. This deal points the other way, toward expense management — starting with AI spending. It joins Databricks, Rippling, and Ramp, which have each recently launched their own AI-spend gateways. “This acquisition is Stripe’s deliberate attempt to embed itself into the middle of capital flows in the AI era,” said PitchBook research analyst Franco Granda.
Why it matters
Owning what Granda calls “the granddaddy of popular AI gateways” gives Stripe visibility into how developers actually use AI models — and, per Granda, “some degree of power over suppliers such as the frontier labs themselves, as well as hyperscalers and neoclouds.”
