SEC subpoenas banks over AI hedge fund Situational Awareness

Situational Awareness, the AI-focused hedge fund led by Leopold Aschenbrenner that lost billions in a late-July downturn, is reportedly being probed by the SEC, which has subpoenaed banks that did business with the fund.

Situational Awareness, the AI-focused hedge fund led by twentysomething OpenAI alum Leopold Aschenbrenner, is having a rough month. The fund went all-in on AI investments and enjoyed phenomenal growth for a period, but a downturn in AI stocks at the end of July erased billions of dollars in value at the firm. Now, federal regulators are reportedly probing the company too.

The New York Times reports that the Securities and Exchange Commission has been subpoenaing banks that did business with the hedge fund, focused on the banks that supervised its trading and channeled funding to support it. The government reportedly warned the banks to “preserve any information” about the hedge fund, though it noted that Situational Awareness has not been accused of any wrongdoing. Situational Awareness did not respond to TechCrunch’s request for comment but told the Times that scrutiny of high-profile funds is to be expected, and that it would “cooperate to the fullest extent with any regulatory request.”

Why it matters

A high-profile AI fund going from phenomenal growth to an SEC subpoena within weeks of a market downturn is a reminder that AI-linked trading strategies carry the same volatility and regulatory exposure as any other concentrated bet, no matter how strong the underlying technology story.
