Roblox expands AI game-building tool and lets creators publish outside the platform
Roblox is expanding its AI-powered game creation tool Build to Serbia and Singapore, and will let creators publish games as standalone apps and in-browser links outside Roblox.
At its annual Roblox Developer Conference (RDC), the company behind the popular gaming platform announced new game-creation tools, expanded NPC (non-player character) capabilities, and the ability to make games available across platforms, including the web. It’s also launching a dedicated Roblox Card and Roblox Wallet for creators.
Roblox is rolling out its generative AI game creation tool more broadly. First announced in July, the feature called “Build” lets users create games using natural-language prompts; it was initially available only in New Zealand and is now expanding to Serbia and Singapore. Build is also gaining desktop access for big-screen creation, a new asset library, and iterative control, and will later this year get a new prompt-based scene-generation feature that will extend to Roblox Studio.
Roblox is also making newly created games available in more places: creators will soon be able to publish their games as separate apps on mobile, PC, and consoles, with Roblox serving as the game engine behind them, and by year-end players will be able to join a game in-browser through a link. The moves suggest Roblox is focused not only on bringing people to Roblox but also on extending the reach of what developers build.
Beyond creation tools, Roblox is adding NPCs that can playtest a game later this year, an offline mode so players can keep playing with a weak network connection, and a new Friends chat tab with voice-typing support that follows players across games. An improved discovery algorithm will suggest shorter games to younger users and longer-playtime games to older users. Through its game engine, Roblox is also adding the ability to create 2D games with an orthographic camera, animated image containers, and direct sprite-sheet import for animation, plus the ability for players to tap an avatar in its Moments vertical feed and purchase items.
Roblox said game makers have earned more than $5 billion on the platform since 2013, with $1.7 billion of that in the last 12 months. To let creators use those earnings, the company is launching a Roblox Wallet, where creators can be paid in real money by the end of each business day and transfer funds to bank accounts, partnering with Airwallex to provide wallet services to U.S. users aged 18 and older, with plans for future global expansion. A Roblox Card, launching next year, will let users spend their earnings at places that accept the card. CEO David Baszucki said players spent over 29 billion hours on the platform across 180 countries last quarter.
Why it matters
By letting creators take their games and earnings beyond Roblox’s own app, the company is betting that expanding its reach — rather than just keeping players inside its walls — will keep it central to how games get built and monetized.
