Pinterest's new AI feature turns beauty Pins into salon-ready plans
Pinterest unveiled "Beauty Guides," an AI feature that turns saved hair and nail Pins into actionable plans, including stylist terminology, time estimates and price ranges, that users can bring to a salon.
Pinterest on Tuesday showed off a new feature that uses AI to turn saved inspiration from beauty-related Pins — hair and nail ideas, for instance — into actionable plans users can take with them to the salon.
“Beauty Guides,” powered by the company’s visual intelligence and generative AI technology, Pinterest Intelligence, translate Pins into the terms and phrases stylists and nail artists use that everyday users may not know, such as “balayage,” “root melt” or “almond nails.”
The feature is a practical way to bring AI into something people already do: bringing a photo of their inspiration to a salon appointment. Having the right terminology on hand while discussing what to keep or change about a look can be useful on its own, and the guides also offer information to help users plan their visit, including how long each part of the process may take and the likely cost — useful context given that a technique like balayage can run into the hundreds of dollars.
The action guides appear when a user taps the “Get the Guide” button within the app. They then offer details on exactly what to ask for to achieve the same look, the time it takes, the price range, and maintenance requirements, such as how often a user will need to trim, tone or touch up.
At launch, the feature works across Pins related to hairstyle, color, nail shape and finish.
Why it matters
By translating visual inspiration into the specific language and logistics of a salon visit, Pinterest is positioning its AI as a practical bridge between browsing and buying a service, rather than a standalone chat experience.
