Musk throttles Grok Bot limits over 'unsustainably high' costs

Elon Musk confirmed SpaceX deliberately throttled Grok Bot's usage limits, citing costs "unsustainably high" relative to revenue.

Grok Bot users had their weekly usage caps unexpectedly maxed out over Halloween weekend, with some saying on X that a figure as low as 50% suddenly read 100% even though they had not touched the app overnight. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk confirmed Sunday in an X post that this was deliberate, not a glitch.

“The cost of serving Grok Bot was unsustainably high relative to revenue,” Musk wrote, replying to a user’s question. He has not raised the issue on his main feed, instead continuing to tout Grok Bot’s ability to help users buy gifts for family.

Grok Bot has been held up as proof of concept for the recently public SpaceX: in a filing last month, the company put AI at 52% of its income. Its renamed “Super Intelligence” division turned a profit of $431 million — a rarity in the AI industry — though that figure would have been higher without $1.2 billion in one-time costs tied to its acquisition of Cursor. Musk has called Grok Bot’s growth the fastest he has seen “of a product” in his life.

Musk has not said how the tighter limits will affect subscribers going forward.

Why it matters

The throttling shows that even SpaceX’s fast-growing AI arm is not immune to the unit-economics squeeze facing the wider industry: serving heavy users of a popular AI product can cost more than it earns, a tension likely to keep shaping how generous any AI company can afford to be with free or cheap usage.
