AI wearables have become something of a cliché in the tech industry — devices like Friend have turned the idea of physical AI into more of a punchline than a breakthrough product for many consumers. That hasn’t stopped Meta from entering the category with its own AI wearable, called Muse Charm, designed to give people another way to stay connected to Muse, the company’s recently launched and already popular personal AI agent.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed the device in a keynote-closing surprise moment during Meta’s annual Connect event on Wednesday. Muse Charm is not ready to ship yet — Zuckerberg said his team still has to finalize how the device’s components are laid out — but he promised units would be ready to ship in time for the December holidays.

Inside the palm-sized totem lives Jolly, the cute digital avatar that now represents the Muse agent internally at Meta. The device is designed to be carried in a pocket or clipped to a keychain, and it comes with a tiny screen that displays Jolly. Users can talk to the device directly, which can then presumably carry out tasks on their behalf. “We packed the whole Muse experience, including the whole real-time voice and avatar stack, into something that fits on a keychain and is always available to talk to,” Zuckerberg said during the keynote, adding that tapping the fingerprint sensor in the corner starts a conversation without needing to unlock a phone or open an app. For anyone not wearing Meta’s smart glasses, he said, the device is meant to be the fastest way to talk to Muse and show it what’s happening nearby.

The result has a quasi-Tamagotchi feel: a lightweight, personality-filled gadget designed to keep users continuously connected to Meta’s software. It also gives the social media giant a comparatively low-stakes way to experiment with AI wearables while distributing its AI agent to more people.

Why it matters

Muse Charm gives Meta another distribution channel for Muse beyond phones and smart glasses, letting the company test consumer appetite for standalone AI hardware ahead of the December shopping season.
