Leaked macOS video hints at camera-equipped AirPods from Apple

Apple seems to be preparing launch materials for AirPods with a built-in camera, according to a leaked video spotted by MacRumors inside the latest macOS update. The video, found in macOS 26.7 RC — a release candidate, or pre-release test build — shows a man holding up a book and talking to Siri about it using visual information — an interaction only possible if the AirPods themselves can see what he’s looking at.

“With Visual Intelligence, your world becomes savable. See something you like? Just ask me to save it for later,” the voiceover in the video says.

MacRumors reports that the new AirPods carry a camera that can examine objects in front of the user and answer questions about them. The publication apparently found a line of software code suggesting the AirPods will notify users if their hair or something else is covering the camera.

In May, Bloomberg reported that Apple was in the late stages of testing such a device. That report said the camera-equipped AirPods would resemble the AirPods Pro 3, but with a longer stem and an LED light indicating when data is being sent to the cloud.

Other devices — including Meta’s Ray-Ban glasses, the Looki pendant, and Rokid’s smart glasses — already offer similar camera-based features for identifying objects and answering questions about a wearer’s surroundings. This might be Apple’s way of embedding real-world intelligence into a device before it launches smart glasses of its own.

Bloomberg has noted that Apple originally wanted to release the new AirPods in the first half of 2026, but now that the new Siri is set to ship in September, Apple will look to launch the camera-equipped AirPods alongside its operating-system updates.

Why it matters

If confirmed, camera-equipped AirPods would put Apple’s most ubiquitous accessory into the same real-world-AI race as Meta, Rokid, and other smart-glasses makers — potentially ahead of Apple’s own glasses.
