Lambda seeks up to $4B ahead of planned 2027 IPO
Lambda is raising up to $4 billion at a $14.5 billion pre-money valuation in what could be its last private round before a planned 2027 IPO.
Cloud provider Lambda is in talks to raise up to $4 billion at a $14.5 billion pre-money valuation, according to The Wall Street Journal, in what could be the company’s last private financing round before a planned 2027 initial public offering. Coatue Management and Blackstone are leading the round.
A letter to investors reviewed by the Journal shows Lambda’s backlog grew from $15 billion in June to $50 billion in September. Backlog, in cloud-infrastructure terms, reflects contracted future revenue rather than usage already delivered, so the jump signals commitments investors can bank on, not current billings. On its face, that looks like a sharp rise in demand. But much of the increase appears to trace back to a single customer: Anthropic, which signed a deal with Lambda worth $35 billion in late August.
That concentration means Lambda’s valuation, which has climbed significantly since its 2025 funding round, could be leaning heavily on Anthropic’s continued ability to pay. Even so, with reliable GPU capacity still scarce, investors remain willing to bet on companies that supply it — especially those holding large contracts with a major AI lab.
For neoclouds like Lambda, meeting demand is less the obstacle than the cost of doing so. Data center buildouts run largely on debt, and Lambda added $1 billion of it just last week, as lenders grow choosier about who they extend credit to and on what terms. Raising more private capital now not only helps set the tone for Lambda’s eventual IPO pricing, but also gives the company more capital to work with before the scrutiny that comes with public markets arrives.
Lambda was reportedly on track to go public this year but has pushed the timeline back amid market uncertainty. Once it does list, it will join other Nvidia-backed neoclouds — including CoreWeave and Nebius — that now depend on the health of their stock to keep funding data center expansion. British neocloud Nscale filed for an IPO last month and is expected to begin trading soon.
Lambda, Coatue, and Blackstone did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Why it matters
Scarce GPU supply is letting neoclouds raise at steep valuations on the strength of a handful of giant AI-lab contracts — but it also means a single customer’s staying power, like Anthropic’s here, increasingly underwrites the entire bet.
