Google unveils Pixel Watch 5 with smarter Gemini, health tools
Google's new Pixel Watch 5, starting at $399, adds a smarter Gemini assistant and health-monitoring tools that track blood pressure and insulin resistance trends.
Google unveiled the Pixel Watch 5 at its Made by Google event Wednesday, pairing a smarter Gemini experience with advanced fitness and health monitoring. The new smartwatch, which starts at $399, can track blood pressure patterns and insulin resistance, deliver personalized help, and offer better sleep tracking. Google said it designed the watch to deliver help proactively — for instance, surfacing relevant actions or information based on a text message’s context. Users can raise a wrist to ask Gemini a question, get navigation to a nearby lunch spot, or use Gemini offline to manage timers, alarms, and workouts by voice, while the watch face can dynamically surface timely updates like flight information and ETAs.
The Pixel Watch 5 also launches with “Health Guardian,” a suite of proactive health and safety tools. Google says the watch uses sensors and machine learning to track blood pressure patterns before they can strain the heart, a feature tested against 24-hour blood pressure monitors and built on a waveform model trained on more than 1 billion minutes of data from over 500,000 people. The insulin resistance feature combines signals from sleep, heart rate, and physical activity to identify changes in metabolic health that may be associated with insulin resistance and an increased risk of prediabetes or type 2 diabetes; Google will give users a monthly summary of both trends.
A new feature can detect a persistent drop in oxygen saturation and contact emergency services if the watch determines a breathing emergency may be occurring — a feature launching first in select European countries before expanding to additional regions. Sleep-stage tracking is now 15% more accurate, with a new bedtime watch face, a “Smart Wake” feature that wakes users at an optimal point in their sleep cycle, and a new metric tracking minute-by-minute changes in blood oxygen levels.
On the fitness side, Google says GPS route tracking is its most accurate yet, with route mapping twice as accurate as previous generations. The Pixel Watch 5 runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 platform, with 12% more CPU performance and 50% more RAM than the prior platform, making the watch 20% faster overall, according to Google. It supports up to 40 hours of battery life and comes in new colors including Canyon Fog and Olive. The 41mm version starts at $399, while the 44mm starts at $429; the watch is available for preorder starting Wednesday and goes on sale August 20.
Why it matters
Health Guardian pushes wearables further into passive clinical-style monitoring, betting that hypertension and prediabetes risk signals — not step counts — become the next fitness-tracker battleground.
