Fitbit Edge is Google's middle ground between Air and Pixel Watch

Google launched the $179.99 Fitbit Edge, a wearable positioned between the Fitbit Air and Pixel Watch with an OLED display and Gemini-powered Health Coach.

Google expanded its Fitbit lineup Monday with the Fitbit Edge, a new wearable positioned between the Fitbit Air and the Pixel Watch. Priced at $179.99, it combines the Fitbit Air’s slim band with an OLED display for checking map directions, notifications, weather and music controls. That position gives shoppers a step up from the Fitbit Air while skipping the larger footprint of the Pixel Watch.

Like the Pixel Watch and Fitbit Air, the Edge works with Google Health Coach, powered by Gemini, which requires a Google Health Premium subscription. The coach can use a user’s fitness, health and medical information to put together weekly routines and workout plans, then adjust them around their schedule. The Edge also comes with Google’s Health Guardian feature, designed to spot notable changes in health measurements over time, including indicators related to blood pressure and insulin resistance — the same capabilities Google first showed off on the Pixel Watch 5 at its August launch, now extended to the Edge.

Google says the Fitbit Edge can automatically recognize and log up to 100 activities, including runs, bike rides and walks, using context from a user’s movement to work out what they’re doing and add it to their weekly goals, meaning wearers don’t have to manually start a session to start getting credit for those workouts. The device also supports more than 50 exercise modes and can offer on-screen prompts during workouts, such as a nudge to push harder or take a breather.

The company claims the Fitbit Edge’s built-in GPS is 40% more accurate than the previous generation, which should make it easier to track outdoor runs, and says sleep-stage detection is 15% more accurate than on earlier generations, helping the device provide better sleep summaries and coaching tips. The battery is rated for up to seven days on a charge, and the wearable is water-resistant to 50 meters.

The Fitbit Edge is available to preorder through the Google Store now, with store availability set for October 27. Color choices include Obsidian, Fog, Olive and Canyon, and there’s also a Stephen Curry Special Edition priced at $219.99.

Why it matters

By gating its Gemini-powered Health Coach and Health Guardian behind a Health Premium subscription across multiple price tiers, Google is positioning AI health coaching as a recurring-revenue layer on top of its wearables rather than a one-time hardware upsell.
