Eric Schmidt reportedly owns about 1% of Anthropic, roughly half of Amodei's stake

Bloomberg reports that former Google CEO Eric Schmidt owns about 1% of Anthropic, after putting in tens of millions of dollars during the AI lab’s 2021 Series A round, when PitchBook put the startup’s valuation at $461 million. That stake looks remarkably large next to the 2% held by Anthropic co-founder and CEO Dario Amodei, if the estimate holds up.

Anthropic is widely expected to go public before year-end, with some market estimates valuing it as high as $2 trillion — a level at which Schmidt’s stake alone could be worth as much as $20 billion more, building on the $57.5 billion fortune Bloomberg currently estimates he holds.

Schmidt has invested actively in tech since leaving the Google CEO role in 2011, channeling capital through firms including Tomorrow Ventures and Innovation Endeavors Management, plus Hillspire, his family office. His other AI bets include Mistral, General Intuition, and Reflection AI. Schmidt and Anthropic did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Why it matters

A near-$2 trillion IPO valuation would turn even modest early stakes into fortunes — Schmidt’s position shows how concentrated the upside from Anthropic’s expected listing could be among its earliest backers.
