Anthropic hires fewer juniors, logs more meeting time

Anthropic says junior technical hires fell from 27% to 9% of its hiring since early 2025, even as internal meeting time keeps climbing.

Anthropic published a report on Friday on how its own workforce and work patterns have shifted over the past year and a half. The company argues the findings could signal how AI will reshape work organization, hiring and labor demand across the wider economy, given how deeply it has built its workflows around AI — though it concedes other organizations are unlikely to adopt AI as thoroughly.

The clearest change is in hiring. The share of junior-level staff across Anthropic’s technical departments has fallen from 21% to 14% — a decline dating back to early 2025 — and the share of junior technical hires specifically has dropped even further, from 27% to 9%. Technical roles now make up a smaller slice of the company overall, 56% of staff versus 61% previously, which Anthropic links to the company’s growing non-engineering functions and coding tools that let non-technical staff build their own software.

Internally, the pace is intense. One employee reportedly described “eternal pressure at Anthropic to move as fast as possible and use Claude for everything.” An April 2026 survey found that 27% of staff said Claude had made them more productive, while 20% said their work had shifted from hands-on tasks toward overseeing multiple Claude instances at once — a pattern Anthropic casts as a new bottleneck, since Claude’s growing output of text increasingly demands human attention and judgment to review and organize.

Despite the AI push, meetings haven’t shrunk — they’ve grown. Calendar data shows meeting time per employee has climbed 20% from a year earlier, and 16% among technical staff, which Anthropic ties to employees leaning more on face-to-face coordination to preserve trust and accountability as AI takes on more of the actual work.

Why it matters

As one of the AI industry’s most AI-native employers, Anthropic’s internal data offers a rare, concrete look at how heavy AI adoption reshapes a workforce — shrinking entry-level technical hiring while increasing, not reducing, the premium on human coordination and judgment.
