Amazon blocks Meta's Muse AI agent from shopping on its site
Amazon began blocking Meta's AI assistant Muse from making purchases on Amazon.com, citing violations of its Conditions of Use for AI agents.
Starting Sunday night, users of Meta’s AI assistant Muse began seeing an error message when they tried to buy goods on Amazon. As spotted by GeekWire, the message read: “Continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon’s Conditions of Use, to which our customers have agreed.” In practice, that means Muse is no longer welcome as a shopper on Amazon — anyone trying to buy something through the AI agent will have to find it somewhere else.
It’s easy to read the block as a standoff between two tech giants. Amazon has its own lineup of foundation models, along with one of the most popular inference platforms on the internet, and faces no legal obligation to open its doors to a rival’s agent.
But there are also substantive reasons Amazon might be wary of the agentic-commerce business just yet. If Muse places a bad order, Amazon is the one left cleaning it up — fielding both an angry customer and an angry vendor. Muse has one of the lower hallucination rates among AI models, but that rate is still pretty far from zero. Even if Amazon sees an opportunity in agent-driven commerce down the line, it may prefer to wait a few more release cycles before opening the door.
Why it matters
The block hints at a broader standoff over agentic commerce: incumbents like Amazon may keep their marketplaces closed to rival AI agents until questions of liability and accuracy are settled, even as they build out shopping features for their own AI.
