X launches hosted MCP server for AI integration
X has launched a hosted Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, allowing AI tools to access platform data using user permissions without enabling write access.
On Monday, the social media platform X unveiled a hosted Model Context Protocol (MCP) server. The tool allows artificial intelligence applications—such as Claude, Cursor, and Grok Build—to communicate directly with the X API by using the account permissions of individual users. MCP is an open standard that defines a common way for AI models to connect to external tools. Previously, developers wanting to connect AI assistants to X had to build, host, and maintain their own MCP servers, as well as manage authentication and API connections. By hosting the server directly, X handles the infrastructure, allowing users to authenticate using their own account permissions.
This hosted setup simplifies the integration process for developers, reducing the time required to connect AI tools to the platform’s data. The hosted MCP does not add new capabilities to the X API, which already allows developers to search posts, look up users, and analyze conversations. Instead, it makes these existing capabilities easier to expose to AI applications. With this launch, X joins a growing ecosystem of technology companies that offer official MCP servers or endpoints. These companies include:
- GitHub
- Slack
- Notion
- Stripe
- Salesforce
To address concerns regarding automated posting and spam, X clarified that the hosted MCP tool is not compatible with the platform’s Write API endpoints. This means AI tools cannot use the protocol to post content autonomously on the network, keeping the integration strictly limited to reading and retrieving data. Furthermore, the hosted MCP does not bypass X’s existing API rules regarding spam, which allow the company to restrict access if it detects spammy behavior. The platform has previously taken steps to limit programmatic spam, including updating its API pricing earlier this year. Under those pricing rules, publishing posts costs $0.015 and posting links costs $0.20. According to X, these price increases were implemented to curb “vectors of misuse.”
Why it matters
The new hosted MCP server allows AI tools to connect directly to X using user permissions, saving developers integration time and positioning X as an information network for real-time data retrieval.
