India's PhonePe shelves IPO as global tensions rattle markets
PhonePe has paused its IPO plans due to market volatility, delaying a listing that could have raised as much as $1.5 billion, but remains committed to going public.
On Monday, PhonePe announced it has paused its plans for an initial public offering (IPO), citing geopolitical tensions and a volatile stock market. The company, which filed an updated IPO prospectus less than two months ago, stated that it remains committed to going public once market conditions improve. The decision comes as escalating tensions in the Middle East rattle global financial markets, prompting investors to retreat. These tensions have impacted Indian benchmark equity indexes, including the Nifty 50 and BSE Sensex, which have both fallen as global markets react.
The company was targeting a market capitalization of around $15 billion for its IPO, which could have raised as much as $1.5 billion. However, two people familiar with the company reported that investment bankers had suggested lowering its valuation expectations to about $9 billion. PhonePe has rejected claims that the IPO pause is due to valuation concerns, calling such reports “baseless.” In an emailed statement, a company spokesperson said, “We paused the process only because of the current market conditions, which are unrelated to PhonePe,”. The planned IPO was expected to provide an exit for early investors, including Tiger Global, Microsoft, and majority owner Walmart. Walmart planned to offload up to 45.9 million shares, representing about 9% of the company, while retaining control.
Despite the delay, PhonePe continues to lead the Indian digital payments market, operating on the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), an Indian government-backed payment system. According to data from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the platform outperformed its competitor, Google Pay, in February 2026:
- PhonePe: Processed about 9.3 billion transactions worth roughly ₹13.1 trillion (about $141.9 billion).
- Google Pay: Processed 6.8 billion transactions worth around ₹9 trillion (around $97.8 billion).
PhonePe’s financial performance shows revenue growth alongside widening losses. For the six-month period ended September 2025, the company’s revenue from operations rose 22% to ₹39.19 billion (about $424.4 million) compared to the previous year. However, its loss widened to ₹14.44 billion (around $156.4 million), up from a prior loss of ₹12.03 billion (about $130.4 million) a year earlier, as the company continued to spend on expanding its services.
Why it matters
PhonePe’s decision highlights how global geopolitical instability is impacting the exit strategies of major Indian fintechs, forcing a recalibration of valuation expectations in a volatile market.
