TikTok expands beyond video to become a super app

It appears that TikTok is evolving into a "super app" by integrating e-commerce, travel booking, and fintech services to compete with major digital platforms.

TikTok is shifting its strategy from its original focus on 15-second videos to a “super app” model—defined as a single platform where users can access a wide range of services beyond the original core function. It appears that the company is taking steps to evolve into this model, aiming to consolidate various digital services into a single destination. This shift follows a significant corporate transition in January, when TikTok transitioned to new, primarily U.S. ownership.

The cornerstone of this expansion is TikTok Shop, which began testing in 2021 and launched in the U.S. in 2023. The platform has successfully competed with online marketplaces like Amazon and Shein. According to eMarketer, the financial growth of TikTok’s social commerce—defined as e-commerce activities conducted through social media platforms—includes:

  • TikTok Shop grew its U.S. sales by 407% in 2024.
  • U.S. sales grew by another 108% in 2025 to reach $15.82 billion.
  • The platform accounted for 18.2% of total social commerce in the U.S. as of last year.
  • This share is expected to reach 24.1% by 2027.

Beyond shopping, TikTok is diversifying into travel, sports, and financial services. In May, the company launched TikTok GO in the United States, allowing users to discover and book hotels and attractions directly within the app. In early June, TikTok launched a dedicated hub for the FIFA World Cup to drive sports content discovery and engagement. Additionally, Reuters reported that TikTok is pursuing a fintech license in Brazil, applying to the central bank to operate as a financial technology company offering lending and payment services. These moves place TikTok in direct competition with established digital giants like Google in search and maps, and Netflix in streaming entertainment.

This expansion mirrors the super app model popularized by WeChat in China, which integrates messaging, payments, and other services into one platform. While TikTok previously launched a streaming service called TikTok Music in 2023 to compete with Spotify and Apple Music, it shut the service down a year later. However, its current multi-pronged expansion into commerce, travel, and finance positions the platform to compete directly for user time and wallet share against established tech giants like Google and Amazon.

Why it matters

TikTok is transitioning from a social media platform to a ‘super app’ by integrating services like shopping, travel booking, and fintech to increase user engagement and compete with established platforms like Google and Amazon.
