AethexAI has raised $3 million in pre-seed funding—an early-stage investment round—to address voice AI gaps in emerging markets. The funding round was led by 4DX Ventures, with participation from Enza Capital, Dorm Room Fund, Mojo Ventures, and Stanford GSB 26 Fund. The startup, co-founded by CEO Mariama Diallo and CTO Ayooluwa Odemuyiwa, is building voice AI systems tailored for regions where Western-centric models often struggle with local dialects and infrastructure constraints.

To combat high latency (the delay before data transfers begin) and jitter (the variation in that delay), the startup built its own orchestration layer—the software that manages data and model interactions—and its own Kora series of small language models. These models range from 300 million to 1.7 billion parameters, a design choice made to avoid relying on larger models hosted outside the region. “The latency and jitter that we saw on automated calls in this region were outrageous. If we had become orchestrators, we might have had to use large models that were hosted outside the region, resulting in higher latency. We realized that in order for this to work, we have to use very small models and cut latency at every step,” said Odemuyiwa.

The startup is targeting regions where voice remains the dominant channel for customer interaction. Walter Baddoo, co-founder and managing partner of 4DX Ventures, noted that enterprises in Africa and the Middle East process roughly three times the call volume of their Western counterparts. While competitors like ElevenLabs, Deepgram, Sierra, and Cognigy are expanding, their systems are often optimized for Western markets, such as the U.S. and Europe. This leaves a gap in addressing the specific latency and dialect issues prevalent in emerging markets.

AethexAI is currently handling more than 17,000 calls per day. The company is focusing on specific use cases such as debt collection and KYC (Know Your Customer, the standard identity-checking process). To help clients navigate the technology, the startup advises them to start small. Diallo explained that the company asks clients to select a single, critical use case to begin with, acknowledging that the startup is still small and cannot address every need immediately.

Why it matters

AethexAI is building voice AI specifically for markets in Africa and the Middle East. By addressing latency and dialect issues that the company claims major players have overlooked, the startup is targeting a critical customer interaction channel where voice remains the dominant medium.
