AI takes center stage in 2026 Super Bowl commercials

The 2026 Super Bowl saw a surge in AI-focused advertising, led by a 30-second commercial from vodka brand Svedka that was primarily AI-generated, and a combative spot from AI developer Anthropic. Svedka’s ad, which featured the return of its robot character, was produced in partnership with Silverside, an AI company whose previous work has sparked controversy. According to Svedka’s parent company, Sazerac, the project required roughly four months to reconstruct the robot character and train the AI model to mimic movements. Meanwhile, Anthropic used its airtime to target competitor OpenAI, poking fun at OpenAI’s plans to introduce advertisements to ChatGPT. The commercial concluded with the tagline: “Ads are coming to AI. But not to Claude.”

These aggressive marketing tactics quickly drew scrutiny and sparked controversy across the industry. The rivalry between the AI developers escalated online when OpenAI’s Sam Altman called Anthropic’s campaign “clearly dishonest.”

Beyond the corporate feuds, other major brands leveraged the broadcast to highlight AI-driven features and product rollouts. Amazon promoted its AI assistant, Alexa+, which officially launched to all U.S. users on Wednesday. Smart-home security company Ring showcased its Search Party feature, an AI-enabled tool that helps find missing pets. According to Ring, the feature has already helped reunite more than one lost dog with its owner every day. Other tech companies advertising during the game included Meta, Google, Ramp, Rippling, and Hims & Hers. Website builder Wix also promoted its platform, which features “vibe coding”—a term for AI-driven creation—following its initial unveiling in January, competing for market attention against rival Squarespace.

Why it matters

The 2026 Super Bowl advertisements leveraged AI both to create the commercials and to promote the latest AI products, signaling the technology’s growing role in high-production advertising.
