Standard Nuclear raises $140 million for nuclear fuel production

Standard Nuclear has raised $140 million in a Series A funding round to manufacture fuel for small modular reactors (a type of nuclear reactor design). The funding round was led by Decisive Point, with the capital raised in two tranches of $70 million each. The transaction places Standard Nuclear within a broader nuclear startup sector that raised $1.1 billion by the end of 2025, as investors increasingly back nuclear energy projects to meet growing electricity demands. According to a company spokesperson, the funding was finalized in two tranches after Standard Nuclear met its milestones ahead of schedule following nuclear-related executive orders from President Donald Trump.

The new funding comes seven months after Standard Nuclear emerged from stealth with $42 million in funding. The company is built on the assets of Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation, which went bankrupt in October 2024. The predecessor company had spent years working to commercialize TRISO fuel before its collapse. Following the bankruptcy, Thomas Hendrix, the founder of Decisive Point, purchased the fuel-related assets of the predecessor company for $28 million in a bankruptcy auction.

Standard Nuclear is focusing its production on TRISO (TRi-structural ISOtropic particle fuel), a fuel design originally conceptualized in the 1950s. In this design, uranium particles about the size of a poppy seed are coated in ceramic and carbon, which are then packed into larger spheres. This configuration is intended to make the fuel pellets more resistant to melting down. Although TRISO is not yet widely used, many nuclear startups plan to use it in their reactor designs. Standard Nuclear reports that it has secured $100 million in non-binding sales for 2027. Its current customers include Radiant Energy and Nano Nuclear Energy; the latter company purchased the reactor assets of the bankrupt Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation.

While Standard Nuclear is positioning itself as a critical supplier for the nuclear power market, its success remains tied to the viability of its clients. The company could find itself too far ahead of the puck if nuclear startups cannot deliver reactors on their promised timelines, as these startups face steep challenges in scaling their manufacturing.
