Spotify is introducing a “Verified by Spotify” badge to help listeners identify authentic human artists. The streaming platform is rolling out the green checkmark badges on artist profiles and next to names in search results over the coming weeks. The initiative targets the rise of low-quality AI-generated content (AI slop) and impersonators on the platform. In a blog post, Spotify stated, “Our goal is to make it easier for you to trust and understand the human artistry behind the music you listen to on Spotify, and develop long-term, meaningful connections with the artists and music you love.” The company added that it has designed the program thoughtfully with listeners and artists in mind and will continue to evolve it over time.

To receive the badge, artists must meet specific criteria, including an identifiable presence both on and off the platform and consistent listener activity and engagement over time. Profiles that primarily represent AI-generated music or AI-persona artists are not eligible for verification. Instead, the platform is prioritizing artists with active fan interest and notable contributions to music culture over “functional music” creators whose content is designed for passive or background listening. At launch, more than 99% of artists that listeners actively search for will be verified. Because of the vast number of profiles, Spotify plans to roll out verification on an ongoing basis. The platform is also launching a new profile section in beta across all artist profiles to highlight career milestones, release activity, and touring activity, allowing users to see authentic activity even if an artist does not yet have a badge.

These updates represent Spotify’s latest efforts to address low-quality AI-generated content (AI slop) and impersonators. Last month, Spotify started beta testing an “Artist Profile Protection” feature, which allows artists to review releases before they go live on their profiles. This feature was launched a few weeks after Sony Music requested the removal of more than 135,000 AI-generated songs impersonating its artists on streaming services. While Spotify has not shared specific figures regarding the volume of AI tracks on its own platform, competitor Deezer announced last week that AI-generated tracks represent 44% of all new music uploaded to its platform daily.

Why it matters

Spotify’s verification program highlights the growing tension between streaming platforms and the proliferation of AI-generated content. As competitors and record labels scramble to address impersonation and low-quality uploads, establishing clear markers for human artistry has become essential to protecting artist identity and platform integrity.
