Snapchat adds Place Loyalty badges to Snap Map
Snapchat is launching "Place Loyalty" badges on Snap Map, allowing users to see and share their visit frequency rankings for specific locations.
On Wednesday, Snapchat announced the rollout of its new “Place Loyalty” feature, which displays a user’s visit frequency to specific locations on Snap Map—a location-based feature within Snapchat. The feature introduces a system of badges based on how often a user visits a particular spot. Specifically, users who fall within the top 25% of visitors to a location will see their ranking displayed on the map. From there, they can choose whether to share this ranking with others. The system awards a gold badge to those in the top 1% of visitors, a silver badge to those in the top 10%, and a bronze badge to those in the top 25%. According to Snapchat, these Place Loyalty rankings are visible only to the individual user.
The update builds on the scale of Snap Map, which launched in 2017. While the feature was originally introduced as a tool for users to share their locations with friends and view public snaps from around the world, it has since evolved. Today, the map serves as a discovery engine for local hotspots. Snapchat previously announced that Snap Map has over 400 million monthly active users.
The social media company continues to update its map product to maintain its competitive edge against rivals like TikTok and Instagram. This latest update follows the 2025 launch of “Footsteps,” a feature that allows users to track where they have traveled and see how much of the world they have explored. By adding elements like the Place Loyalty badges, Snapchat seeks to deepen user engagement.
Why it matters
This feature is designed to deepen user engagement by gamifying location history, encouraging users to share their status within their social circles.
