Mind Robotics, an industrial automation startup founded by Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe, has raised $500 million in a Series A round—an early-stage venture capital financing round. The transaction was co-led by venture capital firms Accel and Andreessen Horowitz. This latest round brings the company’s total funding to $615 million since its founding in November 2025, establishing a valuation of about $2 billion.

Scaringe, who also founded the electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian and the micromobility spin-out Also, is positioning Mind Robotics to address industrial manufacturing challenges. The startup, originally named Project Synapse, was conceived as Scaringe planned for Rivian’s future manufacturing capacity. Rivian, which debuted an electric truck in 2018, is preparing to deliver its R2 SUV. The R2 will start at $57,990, which is 20% cheaper than the base R1T pickup, and Scaringe estimates the R2 will cost roughly half as much to build compared to the R1. Anticipating the need for multiple new factories and billions of dollars in capital expenditure (capex), Scaringe launched Mind Robotics to develop robots with human-like skills specifically for factory environments. “I’m wildly bullish on it. It really benefits Riven, but I think it has the potential to be a very large business, just given the scale of what’s happening,” Scaringe said.

Unlike competitors developing humanoid robots for domestic tasks or complex biomechanical displays, Mind Robotics is focusing on hand-focused dexterity. Scaringe argues that mimicking human biomechanics, such as designing robots to perform backflips, introduces unnecessary mechanical complexity, power consumption, and failure modes into a factory. Instead, the startup is prioritizing the development of specialized hands to handle varying industrial tasks, from gripping steel pipes to threading fasteners. This approach allows the company to operate within a more controlled Operational Design Domain (ODD)—the specific environment where the technology is designed to function. By targeting industrial plants rather than homes, the robots avoid unpredictable obstacles like stairs, carpets, or domestic hazards, simplifying deployment at scale.

Mind Robotics represents a shift in industrial automation, moving away from complex humanoid biomechanics toward specialized, hand-focused robotics designed specifically for manufacturing environments. By focusing on the controlled conditions of the factory floor rather than the unpredictable home, the company aims to bypass the mechanical complexity that has slowed the deployment of other humanoid systems.
