Reddit signals continued M&A push for adtech and AI

On Thursday, Reddit reported strong financial results for the fourth quarter, beating market estimates with earnings per share of $1.24. During the earnings call, Reddit CFO Andrew Vollero signaled that the company is looking for more acquisitions in advertising technology (adtech) and other areas to sustain this growth. Vollero stated that the company is not ruling anything off the table as it evaluates potential targets.

The company’s financial highlights for the quarter included:

  • Total revenue of $726 million in the quarter
  • Revenue from ads of $690 million
  • Global daily active unique users of 121.4 million, representing a 19% year-over-year growth

A central element of Reddit’s growth strategy is its approach to integrating acquired technology into existing operations, a process Vollero described as “tucking in” technologies rather than building them internally. Vollero noted that this strategy has been one of the secrets of the company’s success, particularly for its adtech team. According to the CFO, the strategy “Saves us six months to market, saves us twelve months to market, and you have a proven product,” which directly aids Reddit’s monetization as an ad-supported business. This approach builds on a track record of acquisitions, including the purchase of Memorable AI in August 2024, as well as the 2022 acquisitions of Spell, Spiketrap, Oterlu, and MeaningCloud.

Looking ahead, Reddit is looking for businesses that can either leverage the platform’s scale or help grow its user base. When addressing questions about these scaled opportunities, Vollero suggested not overthinking the concept, characterizing the pipeline as a spectrum of opportunities to acquire capabilities and technologies. This acquisition strategy may increasingly intersect with the company’s artificial intelligence roadmap. Reddit sees a growing opportunity to generate revenue from its AI search product, suggesting that future M&A activity could target tools that enhance its machine-learning and search capabilities.

Why it matters

Reddit’s ongoing acquisition strategy highlights how social platforms can leverage targeted M&A in advertising technology and AI to accelerate product development. By integrating proven external technologies rather than building them from scratch, the company can shorten its time-to-market.
