Nintendo has launched Pokémon Pokopia, a cozy life simulator—defined as a genre focused on relaxation and low-stress tasks—set in a post-apocalyptic Kanto region. The game is the first exclusive title for the Switch 2, Nintendo’s new gaming console, and is actively driving hardware upgrades among consumers. The release marks a significant shift for the 30-year-old franchise, introducing gameplay centered on constructing habitats to increase the comfort levels of Pokémon. Players navigate a barren wasteland as a Ditto transformed to look like its missing trainer, working with characters like Professor Tangrowth to rehabilitate the broken world. For instance, players must solve low-stress puzzles, such as figuring out how to soften rocks to free an Onix stuck in a cave, or asking Professor Tangrowth how to celebrate to progress.

The game’s popularity has quickly exceeded sales expectations, prompting retail adjustments. Amazon increased the price of physical copies of Pokémon Pokopia by $10 due to high demand. This price hike brings the total cost of a physical copy to $80, up from the game’s original price of $70. Despite the high price, players are dedicating significant time to the title, with some spending 20 hours playing the game within less than a week of its release. The game is also available as a digital download, and its expansive design has led players to anticipate potential downloadable content (DLC) to explore additional regions, for which they would gladly pay despite the high base cost.

Beyond its core gameplay, the title offers a narrative critique of modern tech infrastructure. An in-game note from an old Poké Mart references real-world infrastructure anxieties, stating, “We all know that everyone’s beloved music streaming services are being forced to shut down one by one due to the steep rise of server fees all over the world.” This commentary mirrors actual constraints in the technology sector, where there are nearly 3,000 energy-intensive data centers under construction in the U.S., adding to the 4,000 existing data centers already in operation. Additionally, the tech industry is facing a RAM shortage that has increased the price of new MacBook Pros by up to $400.

Why it matters

The game’s success as a Switch 2 exclusive highlights the platform’s early adoption drivers, while its narrative commentary on server costs and infrastructure reflects broader anxieties about the tech industry’s energy consumption.
