ChatGPT adds bank account integration for U.S. subscribers

On Friday, OpenAI launched a new set of personal finance tools in preview for ChatGPT Pro, its subscription tier, for users in the U.S. The launch targets a highly active segment of its user base; according to OpenAI, more than 200 million users already ask ChatGPT financial questions every month. The new tools allow these subscribers to connect their financial accounts directly to the chatbot to perform tasks like spending analysis and long-term financial planning.

To enable these connections, OpenAI partnered with Plaid, a financial connection service. Through Plaid, users can link their accounts to over 12,000 financial institutions. The integration allows ChatGPT to display a dashboard of portfolio performance, spending, subscriptions, and upcoming payments. Supported institutions include:

  • Schwab
  • Fidelity
  • Chase
  • Robinhood
  • American Express
  • Capital One

The launch follows OpenAI’s acquisition of the team behind Hiro, a personal finance startup, in April. Hiro was previously backed by venture capital firms including Ribbit, General Catalyst, and Restive. OpenAI noted that the Hiro team’s expertise in finance was useful in launching the new tools, though it did not specify if the entire feature was built by them.

OpenAI plans to support Intuit soon, which would enable more complex financial analysis, such as evaluating the tax impact of a stock sale or calculating the odds of a credit card approval. Users can also ask the chatbot to help build a plan to buy a house in their area in the next 5 years, or ask questions about changes in their recent spending. The company noted that its GPT-5.5 model is stronger at reasoning with context, which is crucial for answering these finance-related questions.

The personal finance tools are available on ChatGPT on the web and on iOS for Pro users. OpenAI plans to use feedback from this preview to improve the product before making it available to Plus users. To address privacy concerns, users can disconnect accounts at any time through their settings, after which the synced data is removed from ChatGPT in 30 days. Users can also view and delete financial memories from their settings page.

The move reflects a broader industry trend where artificial intelligence companies are developing specialized, data-sensitive products to capture specific user needs. Competitors Anthropic and Perplexity have also introduced specialized tools, with Anthropic launching health-related tools and Perplexity recently introducing a financial research product.

Why it matters

OpenAI is moving beyond general-purpose AI by integrating with banking services, signaling a strategic shift toward specialized, data-sensitive products for generalized chatbots.
