OpenAI consolidates product strategy under Greg Brockman
OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman is reportedly taking charge of product strategy as the company consolidates its offerings to focus on an "agentic future."
OpenAI co-founder and president Greg Brockman is reportedly taking charge of the company’s product strategy, according to a report by Wired. This transition appears to solidify an existing operational structure, with Brockman overseeing OpenAI’s products on an interim basis while the company’s CEO of AGI deployment, Fidji Simo, is out on medical leave. Although Simo remains on medical leave, OpenAI told TechCrunch that she worked with Brockman on these changes. The leadership transition comes as the company restructures its product lineup. Specifically, OpenAI plans to combine ChatGPT, its programming product Codex, and its API into a single platform under a single core product team. Wired had previously reported on plans to combine ChatGPT and Codex into a single unified experience.
This consolidation follows a “code red”—an internal term for an urgent strategic refocusing—declared by CEO Sam Altman at the end of last year. Altman’s directive mandated that the company refocus on its core ChatGPT experience. In line with this shift, OpenAI has halted several “side quests,” which is the company’s term for non-core projects. These halted initiatives include the video generator Sora and the research initiative OpenAI for Science. By halting these projects, the company is refocusing on the core ChatGPT experience.
In a staff memo reported by Wired, Brockman outlined the rationale behind the reorganization. “We’re consolidating our product efforts to execute with maximum focus toward the agentic future, to win across both consumer and enterprise,” Brockman stated. This “agentic future” represents OpenAI’s strategic focus on AI agents. According to Brockman, this consolidation is intended to maximize focus on this agentic future, with the goal of winning across both consumer and enterprise markets.
Why it matters
OpenAI is streamlining its product suite to prioritize core development and agentic capabilities, signaling a strategic pivot away from experimental projects toward a unified, enterprise-ready platform.
