OpenAI acquires health startup Torch for reported $100M
OpenAI has acquired health startup Torch, reportedly for $100 million in equity, to integrate the team's "medical memory" technology into its ChatGPT Health service.
OpenAI has acquired Torch, a health records startup, in a transaction that marks an expansion of the artificial intelligence company’s healthcare efforts. While the financial terms of the deal were not officially disclosed by either company, The Information reported that OpenAI paid $100 million in equity for the startup. Both companies confirmed that Torch’s four-person team is joining OpenAI. The transaction functions as an acqui-hire, which is an acquisition primarily intended to secure the talent of the acquired company rather than its standalone products. This structure allows OpenAI to absorb the engineering and product talent of the four-person team directly into its own development pipeline.
The startup’s technology is designed to manage personal medical data. The Torch team described their technology as “a medical memory for AI, unifying scattered records into a context engine.” In this setup, a context engine is a system designed to unify scattered data for AI use. The technology was being developed for an app to combine a person’s medical information from a range of sources, including doctor visits, lab tests, wearables, consumer wellness tests, and other portals. By unifying these data streams, the system aims to provide a source of truth that AI models can query. OpenAI will integrate Torch’s technology and its team into ChatGPT Health, a newly announced service that aims to help users analyze and manage their health.
The founders of Torch have a history in the health-tech sector. The team members previously worked together at Forward Health, an AI-powered doctors’ office startup. Torch co-founder Ilya Abyzov noted in a post on X that the team originally met during their time at the company. Forward Health abruptly shut down in late 2024 after raising over $400 million from investors. While Forward Health attempted to scale AI-powered doctors’ offices, the acquisition by OpenAI provides a different path for the Torch team, shifting their focus to OpenAI’s consumer health initiatives.
Why it matters
The acquisition of Torch and its team will support OpenAI’s newly announced ChatGPT Health service, which aims to help users analyze and manage their health. This integration will allow the service to utilize unified medical records to assist users with health analysis.
