Netflix reportedly acquires Ben Affleck’s AI startup

Netflix may have acquired Ben Affleck’s AI startup, InterPositive, in a deal potentially worth up to $600 million to bolster its post-production capabilities.

Netflix reportedly acquires Ben Affleck’s AI startup

Last week, Netflix announced the acquisition of InterPositive, an AI startup co-founded by Ben Affleck. According to reports from Bloomberg, the transaction could be worth up to $600 million. While Netflix has not publicly confirmed the financial details of the agreement, the reported figure represents the potential maximum valuation of the deal. The actual upfront cash payment may be lower, with the owners of InterPositive remaining eligible for additional payouts that are tied to specific performance targets. If the total transaction value ultimately reaches the upper limit of up to $600 million, it will rank among the streaming giant’s largest acquisitions to date. For comparison, the highest amount Netflix has ever paid for a single acquisition was approximately $700 million, which it spent to acquire the Roald Dahl Story Company.

InterPositive specializes in developing tools designed to help filmmakers work more efficiently during the post-production phase of filmmaking. The acquisition fits directly into Netflix’s broader efforts to integrate generative AI technologies into its content production pipeline. Rather than generating entirely new content from scratch, the startup’s tools focus on streamlining post-production workflows for creators. Netflix has already begun incorporating generative AI into its original programming, having previously utilized the technology to assist in production for the Argentine series “The Eternaut.”

This move comes as Netflix’s primary industry rivals accelerate their own technology integrations. Amazon is currently working on AI initiatives for its film and television projects, while Disney has established a partnership with OpenAI to explore how artificial intelligence can be integrated into its creative and production workflows.

However, the rapid adoption of these technologies has drawn scrutiny. Workers across the film industry have raised significant concerns regarding potential job losses driven by automation. Additionally, there is ongoing debate over whether AI companies are compensating creators fairly for training data used to develop these models.

Why it matters

This acquisition signals Netflix’s strategy to integrate generative AI into its content pipeline, positioning it alongside rivals like Amazon and Disney in the effort to streamline post-production.
