Netflix reports strong growth as Reed Hastings exits board
Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings will leave the board in June as the company reports strong financial growth and an expansion into generative AI.
Reed Hastings, the co-founder and chairman of Netflix, will step down from the company’s board when his term expires in June. The announcement of his departure was made alongside the release of the company’s first-quarter earnings report, which detailed strong financial growth.
During the first quarter, Netflix recorded the following financial results:
- Revenue reached $12.25 billion, representing a 16.2% increase from the same period last year.
- Net income rose nearly 83% to $5.28 billion.
Hastings co-founded the company alongside Marc Randolph in 1999, starting as a subscription DVD-by-mail business when video rental stores still coated the country. Over the next two decades, Hastings led the company’s transition from a physical disc-delivery service—which Netflix officially retired in 2023—into a digital streaming platform. This shift established Netflix as a pioneer in the streaming industry, prompting competitors like Amazon, HBO, Disney, and Hulu to launch similar services.
“My real contribution at Netflix wasn’t a single decision,” Hastings said. He explained that his true impact was focusing on member joy, building an adaptable culture, and establishing a company that could remain successful for generations. Netflix stated that Hastings built a culture of innovation, integrity, and high performance that defines the company today. The company added that his vision pioneered how the world is entertained, leaving an impact felt by audiences around the world. Hastings also noted that his favorite memory was in January 2016, when Netflix enabled nearly the entire planet to enjoy the service.
As Hastings prepares to exit, Netflix is looking to expand into new technological frontiers, specifically generative AI. To support this expansion, the company recently acquired InterPositive, an AI company founded by Ben Affleck. This acquisition and the broader push into generative AI signal a strategic pivot for the streaming platform as it seeks to maintain its market position and financial momentum under the ongoing leadership of CEO Ted Sarandos and co-CEO Greg Peters.
Why it matters
Hastings’ departure marks the end of an era for the streaming giant, which is now shifting its focus toward generative AI and maintaining its financial momentum.
