French artificial intelligence developer Mistral AI is in early discussions to raise about €3 billion (approximately $3.5 billion), Bloomberg reported Friday, citing anonymous sources. If the funding round is finalized, it would value the Paris-based startup at around €20 billion (about $23.15 billion). This potential valuation would nearly double the €11.7 billion valuation that Mistral AI secured during its Series C funding round last September.

Mistral AI launched in 2023 with the stated ambition of making advanced frontier artificial intelligence models accessible to everyone. Since its launch, the company has positioned itself as a “sovereign” alternative to American technology companies. In this context, “sovereign” represents the company’s strategy to provide a homegrown, independent European alternative to U.S. artificial intelligence labs. To support this regional positioning, the startup is establishing a data center near Paris, France, and has secured partnerships with France’s army, the government of Luxembourg, and several European corporations.

Additionally, Mistral AI has taken a more open approach to its development compared to its American rivals. The company offers some of its foundational large language models with open weights, allowing anyone to customize them as they see fit. This open-weights strategy is central to its mission of providing an alternative to the closed models of its U.S. competitors.

Despite its valuation growth, Mistral AI faces a capital gap when compared to its rivals in the United States. According to data from PitchBook, Mistral AI has raised about $4 billion to date. This total is a small fraction of the capital accumulated by American artificial intelligence developers, reflecting how much further U.S. labs have pulled ahead in revenue, model adoption, and enterprise demand:

  • OpenAI: $186 billion raised in total funding
  • Anthropic: $161.25 billion raised in total funding

This funding disparity highlights the broader gap in capital, model adoption, and enterprise demand between European and American artificial intelligence developers. While Mistral AI continues to expand its footprint within Europe, the capital advantages of its U.S. rivals underscore the competitive challenges facing independent European AI initiatives.

Why it matters

If confirmed, the funding would nearly double Mistral AI’s valuation from its previous round. This highlights the company’s ongoing efforts to establish a “sovereign” European alternative to American AI labs, even as U.S. competitors maintain a lead in total capital raised.
