Microsoft is reducing Copilot AI integrations across Windows 11 apps, signaling a strategic shift toward more meaningful features amid consumer pushback against AI bloat.

On Friday, Microsoft announced a series of changes to its Windows 11 operating system, notably reducing Copilot AI integrations across several applications. The reduction affects features within Photos, Widgets, Notepad, and the Snipping Tool. The shift represents a more intentional approach to the deployment of the company’s AI assistant. Pavan Davuluri, Microsoft’s EVP of Windows and Devices, stated that the company is becoming more intentional about how and where Copilot integrates across Windows. According to Davuluri, the goal is to focus on “integrating AI where it’s most meaningful” and ensuring that these features are genuinely useful.

This less-is-more approach to AI integration may reflect growing consumer pushback against what the source describes as AI bloat. While artificial intelligence is widely understood to be a useful tool, public concern regarding trust and safety appears to be rising. According to a Pew Research study from June 2025, half of U.S. adults are more concerned than excited about AI. This represents a notable increase from 2021, when 37% of U.S. adults expressed concern about the technology.

This is not the first time Microsoft has adjusted its AI plans. Earlier this month, the news site Windows Central reported that Microsoft’s plan to ship Copilot-branded AI features across Windows 11 had been quietly shelved. Additionally, Microsoft delayed the launch of its AI-powered memory feature, Windows Recall, for over a year to address privacy concerns. Although Windows Recall launched last April, security vulnerabilities are still being discovered.
