Microsoft earnings show $7.6 billion boost from OpenAI investment

On Wednesday, Microsoft reported quarterly revenue of $81.3 billion, representing a 17% increase compared to the same period last year. This revenue figure beat Wall Street analyst expectations, which had anticipated $80.27 billion. A portion of Microsoft’s financial gains came from its investment in OpenAI, which resulted in a $7.6 billion increase in Microsoft’s net income for the quarter.

The relationship between the two companies follows renegotiated deal terms in September 2025, which occurred when OpenAI restructured into a public benefit corporation—a type of for-profit corporate entity that includes positive impact on society in its charter. Microsoft has invested more than $13 billion in OpenAI. The AI lab is currently looking to raise additional funding at a valuation between $750 billion and $830 billion, Bloomberg reported. Under their agreements, OpenAI reportedly has a 20% revenue share agreement with Microsoft and agreed to buy $250 billion of Azure services. This commitment shows on Microsoft’s books as commercial remaining performance obligations—defined as contracts that have not yet been paid out. These obligations leaped to $625 billion from $392 billion in the previous quarter, and Microsoft stated that 45% of this total is from OpenAI.

Microsoft is also working with Anthropic to boost anticipated future revenue. In November 2025, Microsoft announced a $5 billion investment in Anthropic, and the AI lab signed up for $30 billion of Azure compute capacity. This partnership helped boost Microsoft’s anticipated future revenue in the form of commercial bookings—defined as anticipated future revenue—which grew by 230% during the quarter. To support these cloud services, Microsoft spent $37.5 billion on capital expenditures—defined as funds used by a company to acquire, upgrade, and maintain physical assets—during the quarter.

Overall, Microsoft Cloud revenue reached $50 billion, representing 17% growth. Other business segments saw different results; Windows devices growth was essentially flat at 1%, while Xbox content and services declined by 5%.

A breakdown of Microsoft’s quarterly financial metrics:

  • Reported Revenue: $81.3 billion (up 17% year-over-year)
  • Microsoft Cloud Revenue: $50 billion
  • Capital Expenditures: $37.5 billion
  • Net Income Increase from OpenAI: $7.6 billion

Why it matters

Microsoft’s earnings reveal the significant financial impact of its AI partnerships, specifically with OpenAI and Anthropic, which are driving massive increases in Azure service commitments and capital expenditures.
