Meta launches global subscription plans for flagship apps
Meta is rolling out global consumer subscription plans for Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, while beginning tests for new business, creator, and AI-focused tiers under the "Meta One" brand.
On Wednesday, Meta announced the global rollout of consumer subscription plans for its social applications: Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp. The new “Plus” plans are designed to offer extra features for a monthly fee, such as profile customization, story insights, and messaging personalization. Specifically, the pricing for these consumer tiers is set at:
- Instagram Plus ($3.99/mo): Offers features like story rewatch counts, unlimited audience lists, and profile customization.
- Facebook Plus ($3.99/mo): Provides a similar set of social expression and customization features.
- WhatsApp Plus ($2.99/mo): Focuses on personalization, offering custom ringtones, app themes, and additional pinned chats.
These new offerings do not replace Meta Verified, which remains the company’s existing subscription service focused on verification, impersonation protection, and support.
Alongside the consumer rollout, Meta is beginning tests of new subscription offerings for businesses, creators, and Meta AI users. These professional and AI-focused plans will be housed under a new brand called Meta One, which will serve as the company’s home for its subscription offerings going forward. Naomi Gleit, Meta’s head of product, noted that “more fun features” will be added to these offerings over time. The pricing tiers for the Meta One plans include:
- Meta One Plus ($7.99/mo): Designed for Meta AI users to access assistant features.
- Meta One Premium ($19.99/mo): Unlocks more capacity on higher compute queries for complex tasks and expanded image generation.
- Meta One Essential ($14.99/mo): Tailored for creators and businesses, offering a verification badge, impersonation protection, and an enhanced linksheet.
- Meta One Advanced ($49.99/mo): Includes all Essential benefits plus search visibility boosts, feed features, and advanced analytics.
The rollout schedules and testing locations for these new Meta One tiers are highly segmented. The AI-focused plans, Meta One Plus and Meta One Premium, will start testing next month in Singapore, Guatemala, and Bolivia. Meanwhile, the creator and business plans, Meta One Essential and Meta One Advanced, will begin tests later this week in Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Thailand, and Bangladesh.
These subscription initiatives represent a strategic shift for Meta to diversify its revenue streams beyond its core advertising model. By charging for specialized features, the company aims to extract more value from its existing audience of billions. This diversification addresses the limited growth opportunities for these applications in markets where user acquisition has already achieved global saturation.
Why it matters
This launch marks a strategic pivot for Meta to move beyond ad-dependent revenue by monetizing its massive, saturated user base through tiered subscription models.
