On Thursday, Meta announced an improved Meta Account system designed to streamline account and device management across its product ecosystem. The company plans to roll out the new system over the next year. The update addresses the complexity of managing separate credentials and settings across Meta’s various platforms and devices, which include Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, Meta Horizon, and Meta AI glasses. While Meta’s existing Accounts Center already serves to streamline this experience, the new Meta Account system aims to simplify it further.

Under the updated system, users can set a single password for all of their accounts within the Meta ecosystem. To enhance security, these logins can be protected with Passkeys—an authentication method that uses biometrics, such as fingerprints or facial recognition, or device passwords. The Meta Account system will also provide centralized security recommendations for multi-factor authentication (a security process requiring multiple forms of verification) and login alerts across devices. Crucially, the setup does not force users to link all of their accounts; those who prefer to keep their logins separate can do so, and users can add or remove accounts at any time.

The system distinguishes between settings that apply across the entire ecosystem and those that are unique to individual platforms.

  • Centralized settings: Core configurations such as passwords, two-factor authentication, and associated email addresses can be managed in one place. According to Meta, “Now, more settings can be centrally managed this way, including your password, two-factor authentication, and the email address associated with your account. Because these don’t change from app to app, you shouldn’t have to update them separately.”
  • App-specific settings: Configurations unique to individual apps remain managed independently within those specific apps. For example, settings determining who can see Facebook posts or who can tag a user in an Instagram photo will remain inside their respective apps.

Additionally, the update introduces consolidated parental controls. Through the Family Center dashboard, parents will be able to supervise teens’ behavior across multiple apps—including Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, and Meta Horizon—from a single interface, eliminating the need to navigate each app separately.

Why it matters

The update aims to reduce friction for users navigating Meta’s expansive product suite by centralizing core security and account settings, while preserving the autonomy of app-specific configurations.
