Meta launches Muse Spark 1.1 to compete in AI coding
Meta launched Muse Spark 1.1, a multimodal AI model for agentic coding, pricing it to compete with rivals from OpenAI and Anthropic.
Meta publicly launched a new version of Muse Spark on Thursday — a multimodal AI model, meaning it can process and act on multiple types of input, built for agentic coding, where the system operates as an autonomous agent handling multi-step software tasks. According to Meta, Spark 1.1 can engage in multistep reasoning, handle complex processes, manage digital workflows, and deploy new features in enterprise systems. The first version of Spark was announced in April.
Cost remains a persistent point of competition across the AI industry, and Meta appears to be offering a competitive rate for its new model. Reuters reports that Meta will charge:
- $1.25 per million input tokens (the units of data fed into the model)
- $4.25 per million output tokens (the units the model generates)
That pricing puts Spark 1.1 close to, though slightly above, Anthropic’s Claude Haiku 4.5 and OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Luna — the two models Meta is most directly challenging in the agentic-coding space.
The release apparently carried enough weight to prompt CEO Mark Zuckerberg to post on X for the first time in three years; his last post on the platform came in July 2023. Zuckerberg described the model as “a strong agentic and coding model at a very low price,” and Meta separately said in a blog post that “Muse Spark 1.1 delivers exceptional performance in personal agentic tasks that require planning and orchestration across a range of external apps and services.” Zuckerberg also signaled that more releases are coming soon, implying Meta plans to expand its model lineup further.
The launch capped a dense week of AI announcements. Meta had already unveiled a separate AI image-generation model, Muse Image, on Tuesday, while SpaceXAI released a new version of its Grok model and OpenAI introduced a new family of models, GPT-5.6, also on Thursday.
