Meta acquires robotics startup to advance humanoid AI

Meta has acquired humanoid robotics startup Assured Robot Intelligence, integrating its team into the company's Superintelligence Labs to advance foundation models for physical AI.

Meta has acquired humanoid robotics startup Assured Robot Intelligence (ARI) to bolster its development of physical artificial intelligence. Under the terms of the acquisition, the startup’s team members will join Superintelligence Labs, Meta’s AI research division. A Meta spokesperson confirmed the transaction, stating, “We acquired Assured Robot Intelligence, a company at the frontier of robotic intelligence designed to enable robots to understand, predict, and adapt to human behaviors in complex and dynamic environments.”

The startup, which previously raised an undisclosed seed round from the AI seed firm AIX Ventures, was focused on building foundation models designed to allow humanoid robots to perform physical labor, such as household chores. The acquisition brings technical leadership to Meta’s research division. ARI co-founder Xiaolong Wang previously worked as a researcher at Nvidia and as an associate professor at UC San Diego. Co-founder Lerrel Pinto previously taught at NYU and co-founded the humanoid startup Fauna Robotics, which was acquired by Amazon last month. According to a Meta spokesperson, the team led by Pinto and Wang will bring deep expertise in designing models and capabilities for robot control and self-learning to whole-body humanoid control.

The acquisition aligns with a broader industry focus on physical AI. Many AI experts report that the path to artificial general intelligence (AGI)—the theoretical point where AI reaches or surpasses human-level intelligence—will require training AI models in the physical world, where systems learn through direct interaction rather than digital data alone. This effort comes as Meta continues its own long-term robotics research; a leaked memo from a year ago previously revealed the company’s ambitions to develop consumer-facing humanoid robotics hardware and AI models, even if the company never releases a consumer humanoid product.

While the long-term potential of the humanoid robotics market is widely recognized, financial institutions hold highly divergent projections for its eventual scale:

  • Goldman Sachs projects the robotics market will reach $38 billion by 2035.
  • Morgan Stanley estimates the market will reach $5 trillion by 2050.
