Amazon brings color and AI to its premium Kindle Scribe tablet
Amazon has launched the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft, a premium 11-inch e-ink tablet featuring a color display and AI-powered note-taking tools, starting at $629.99.
Amazon has released the Kindle Scribe Colorsoft, an 11-inch electronic ink display technology (e-ink) tablet that combines a color display with artificial intelligence-driven note-taking features. First announced in December, the device began shipping on January 28, 2026. Amazon is positioning the tablet as a specialized tool for researchers and students, hoping to carve out a niche in the tablet market with these upgraded Kindle devices.
The 2025 model offers several hardware upgrades over previous iterations. According to Amazon, the device is 40% faster when turning pages or writing. The technical specifications include:
- Thickness: 5.4 mm (0.21 inches)
- Weight: 400 g (0.88 pounds)
- Battery life: Up to 8 weeks between charges
- Storage: Available in 32GB or 64GB capacities
The device features a glare-free, oxide-based e-ink display designed to mimic the feel of writing on paper. It includes a pen that requires no charging and supports 10 pen colors and five highlight colors. Replacement pen tips are sold in a 10 pack for around $17. For document management, users can import files from Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive, and export their notebooks to Microsoft OneNote.
The tablet also introduces several software features, including Active Canvas—a feature that creates space for notes in documents by wrapping text around handwriting—and Ask Notebooks AI, which allows users to query their notes.
Amazon is positioning this device to compete directly with specialized e-ink tablets like the reMarkable, rather than its own lower-cost e-readers. While a traditional Kindle costs $110 and the Kindle Paperwhite is $160, the standard 11-inch Kindle Scribe is priced at $549.99, and the Colorsoft version starts at $629.99. The 64GB version is priced at $679.99, while the Fig color version is only available at $679.99 with 64GB of storage. Compatible cases cost an additional $139.99. At these price points, the device represents a significant investment, with the 11-inch e-ink tablet costing $630+.
Why it matters
Amazon is attempting to capture the professional e-ink tablet market, positioning the Scribe Colorsoft as a specialized tool for researchers and students rather than a general-purpose consumer device. By integrating color and AI-driven productivity features, the company is trying to justify a premium price point that competes with dedicated note-taking tablets rather than standard e-readers.
