On Wednesday, at the Morgan Stanley Tech, Media and Telecom conference in San Francisco, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang announced that the company’s recent investments in OpenAI and Anthropic are likely to be its last in both companies. Huang asserted that the opportunity to invest in OpenAI and Anthropic closes once they go public, which is anticipated to happen through an Initial Public Offering (IPO). While Nvidia has positioned these deals as strategic moves to expand its ecosystem reach, the decision marks a shift in how the semiconductor giant manages its relationships with these artificial intelligence developers. Huang’s remarks indicate that Nvidia is preparing to halt future funding rounds for these partners.

Huang explained that Nvidia’s investments are focused strategically on expanding and deepening the company’s ecosystem reach. However, the financial structures of these deals have drawn scrutiny. Michael Cusumano, an MIT Sloan professor, reported that Nvidia’s investment in OpenAI was kind of a wash, observing that, “Nvidia is investing $100 billion in OpenAI stock, and OpenAI is saying they are going to buy $100 billion or more of Nvidia chips.” The actual capital deployed also fell significantly short of initial announcements. The financial details of these arrangements highlight the gap between initial announcements and finalized deals, showing how the commitments evolved over time:

  • Up to $100 billion: Nvidia’s initial investment pledge to OpenAI, which was first announced last September.
  • $110 billion: The total funding round raised by OpenAI.
  • $30 billion: Nvidia’s finalized investment in OpenAI, which was completed last week.
  • $100 billion: The value of Nvidia chips OpenAI planned to purchase.
  • $10 billion: Nvidia’s investment in Anthropic, which was announced in November.

The investment pullback also coincides with escalating geopolitical and regulatory friction. The Trump administration recently blacklisted Anthropic. Following that decision, OpenAI struck a deal with the Pentagon (the US Department of Defense). Anthropic characterized OpenAI’s move as mendacious. These developments follow earlier friction between the partners; Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei previously compared U.S. chip companies selling high-performance processors to approved Chinese customers to selling nuclear weapons to North Korea.

Why it matters

Nvidia is pulling back from future investments in OpenAI and Anthropic, citing the upcoming IPO window, though the move follows significant complications in its relationships with both companies.
