WhatsApp begins rolling out username reservations

WhatsApp has started rolling out username reservations for its 3 billion users. The rollout began earlier in June, allowing users to claim their unique handles ahead of the official launch. However, the username feature is not currently active. Instead, the feature is expected to go live in the coming weeks, with the reservation phase serving to prevent duplication before the system becomes fully operational.

Once active, the update will allow users to share their contact information without disclosing their phone numbers. This provides a simplified contact method for businesses and a privacy benefit for individuals. To manage privacy, WhatsApp is introducing a security feature called a “username key.” This key is a four-digit code that users can require new contacts to enter before they can initiate a chat. By switching settings from allowing contact from “Everyone” to “People who know my key,” users can prevent unsolicited messages. Users will be able to save this four-digit key or generate a new one at any time.

To claim a handle, users can navigate to their account settings, select “Account,” and tap on the “Username” option under the “Your Account” section. If setting up a username for the first time, users will see a “Create username” option to type in and choose their handle. If a chosen username is unavailable, WhatsApp will suggest variations when the user taps the “suggest a username” option. Once set, users can edit their username by returning to the same menu and tapping the “Edit” button in the top right-hand corner, or they can choose to delete the username entirely.

For those who already have established identities on other Meta platforms, WhatsApp allows users to log in through Facebook or Instagram to reserve their existing handles. However, some restrictions apply: WhatsApp is reserving specific usernames for public figures and entities, meaning these handles will not be available for general registration.

Why it matters

The username feature allows users to share their WhatsApp contact information without disclosing their phone number, offering a privacy benefit for individuals and a simplified contact method for businesses.
