Google is updating its search AI experience to include additional context to links, such as excerpts from web forums and blogs. The update applies to AI Overviews—which are Google’s AI-generated search result summaries. To explain the change, Google stated: “To help you find the most helpful insights to explore further, AI responses will now include a preview of perspectives from public online discussions, social media, and other firsthand sources. We’re also adding more context to these links, like a creator’s name, handle, or community name, to help you decide which discussions you might want to read or participate in.” This update is designed to provide users with more background on where the AI-generated information originates.

The company might want to pull in voices from web forums to address queries that lack objective yes-or-no answers, as Google notes that for many searches, people are increasingly seeking out advice from others. However, this approach faces scrutiny regarding the reliability of AI-generated summaries. Two years ago, Google overhauled its search experience to put AI front and center, a move that has faced mixed reception. Users quickly pointed out that the feature failed to recognize sarcasm or information that comes from dubious sources. For instance, the system previously cited The Onion as a source of factual information, and pulled forum content from platforms like Reddit without distinguishing reliable advice from jokes.

While Google has updated the system, AI Overviews remain prone to hallucination. A New York Times analysis found that AI Overviews were correct about nine times out of 10. However, because Google processes trillions of queries a year, even a success rate of nine times out of 10 means that hundreds of thousands of searches could turn up inaccurate results every minute. By adding more context to where its AI Overview commentary comes from, Google may help users decipher if they are getting information from a trustworthy source. This approach is similar to how competitor AI services like ChatGPT or Claude provide links to back up claims, though users are still advised to double-check that the AI is not hallucinating the validity of these citations.

Why it matters

Google is integrating forum content and additional context into its AI Overviews to address user needs for firsthand advice, while attempting to mitigate ongoing concerns regarding AI hallucinations and source reliability.
