Google expands AI photo editing to Australia, India, and Japan

On Tuesday, Google announced the expansion of its natural language-based editing feature in Google Photos to Australia, India, and Japan. The feature, which first launched last August for Pixel 10 users in the U.S., allows users to describe the changes they want to make to their photos using plain language text commands rather than manually adjusting sliders. As part of this geographic expansion, Google is also adding support for six regional languages: Hindi, Tamil, Marathi, Telugu, Bengali, and Gujarati.

The prompt-based editing tool, called “Help me Edit,” utilizes Google’s Nano Banana image model to transform photos. The system processes images directly within the Google Photos application, meaning all editing tasks are completed on-device without requiring an active internet connection. The feature is not restricted to Google’s own Pixel devices and is compatible with any Android device that meets the following minimum technical specifications:

  • Running Android version 8.0 or higher
  • Equipped with at least 4GB of RAM

Alongside the geographic expansion, Google is rolling out support for C2PA Content Credentials in Google Photos for these newly supported countries. C2PA Content Credentials is a technical standard for certifying the source and history of media content. By implementing this standard, Google Photos will embed metadata indicating when an image has been created or edited using artificial intelligence tools. This addition comes as platforms continue to address how to label AI-generated and AI-edited images.

This rollout represents the latest step in Google’s broader effort to integrate artificial intelligence features across its consumer photo platform. Last November, the company expanded its AI-powered search capabilities to over 100 countries, introducing support for more than 17 languages. Additionally, last week, Google introduced a “Meme me” feature that allows users to combine reference templates with their own images to create memes.

Why it matters

Google is scaling its AI-powered photo editing capabilities to more international markets and adding support for several regional languages, continuing its strategy of integrating AI features across its consumer photo platform.
