Sycamore announced on Monday that it has raised a $65 million seed round to build an enterprise AI agent orchestration layer. In the technology sector, a seed round refers to the early-stage capital used to launch a new business, while an AI agent is defined as an autonomous software program capable of executing tasks independently. The funding round was led by venture capital firms Coatue and Lightspeed.

The startup is led by CEO and founder Sri Viswanath, who brings decades of enterprise experience to a sector where the typical startup founder is a 19-year-old. Viswanath previously spent over 20 years building enterprise platforms. “I’ve spent over 20 years building enterprise platforms at global scale at Sun Microsystems, VMware, Groupon, and as CTO of Atlassian, where I led the cloud transformation and scaled the engineering org to 7,000+,” Viswanath said.

To differentiate Sycamore from its competitors, Viswanath is focusing on a holistic architecture. He noted that most tools take existing workflows and layer agents on top. In contrast, Sycamore’s product starts with the problem itself and then designs and builds the right solution from scratch, whether that involves agents, back-end systems, front ends, or data integrations. Viswanath also stated that the funding round came together through long-standing relationships, and asserted that Sycamore has already gained traction with some big enterprise customers.

Sycamore is entering a highly competitive market for enterprise AI agent orchestration. While the market for enterprise AI agent platforms is widely expected to be massive, the startup faces competition from both well-funded newcomers and established technology giants. Recent funding activity in the sector includes:

  • Isara, an OpenAI-backed competitor run by 23-year-old founders, which raised a $94 million round, as reported by The Wall Street Journal last week.
  • Airia, which announced a $100 million raise in September.
  • Port, which announced a $100 million round in December.

In addition to these startups, major technology incumbents are positioning themselves to dominate the enterprise agent platform space. These competitors include model creators OpenAI and Anthropic, alongside cloud providers Microsoft Azure and AWS, which also aim to offer enterprise agent platforms.

Why it matters

Sycamore is entering a highly competitive market for enterprise AI agent orchestration. The startup aims to differentiate itself by building a holistic layer from scratch rather than simply layering agents on top of existing workflows.
