Flighty launches tool to track airport disruptions across the world
Flighty has launched "Airport Intelligence," a new feature providing real-time alerts and technical data translations for 14,000 airports in the world to help travelers navigate increasingly common airport disruptions.
Flight-tracking mobile application Flighty has released a new “Airport Intelligence” feature that provides real-time alerts about airport disruptions. The feature covers 14,000 airports in the world, aiming to translate complex aviation data into simple language so users can understand how their journey could be impacted. By opening up access to this data, the application helps travelers track disruptions across the world.
To power this feature, the company uses the same data pilots and airlines use. This includes Meteorological Aerodrome Reports (METARs), which serve as technical weather data for aviation, and Terminal Aerodrome Forecasts (TAFs), which provide technical weather forecast data for aviation. Additionally, the application integrates Notice to Airmen (NOTAMs), which function as alerts regarding flight operations. While these airport events are described in technical language, Flighty translates these messages into simple language.
According to Flighty CEO Ryan Jones, “Airport meltdowns” are increasingly common. Jones noted that historically, interpreting this data required specialized expertise. “Airport meltdowns are increasingly common, and historically it would take a pilot, controller, or a serious aviation expert to explain why, until now. “Airport Intelligence turns raw data into real insights, so you always know what’s happening at your airport,”” Jones said.
The release of the feature comes amid “airport chaos” that has disrupted travel. In the Middle East, tensions have caused “flight delays, cancellations, and airport shutdowns.” Meanwhile, the U.S. has been facing a “shortage of Transportation Security Administration agents” (the US agency responsible for airport security), leading to closed security checkpoints and extra-long lines. By translating technical data, the tool aims to give travelers more clarity during these disruptions.
Why it matters
As airport disruptions become the new norm, Flighty’s move to democratize technical aviation data helps travelers understand the ‘why’ behind their travel delays, moving beyond simple status updates to actionable intelligence.
