Figma integrates OpenAI’s Codex for design-to-code workflows
Figma is integrating OpenAI’s Codex to allow users to seamlessly move between design and coding environments using the Model Context Protocol.
Figma is integrating OpenAI’s Codex to allow users to create and tweak designs from within coding environments. The integration utilizes Figma’s Model Context Protocol (MCP) server—which serves as a standard for connecting artificial intelligence models to data—to bridge the two platforms. By using the MCP server, users can move between Figma and Codex. This partnership follows a similar deal with Anthropic for its Claude Code tool, which was announced one week prior, signaling Figma’s push to connect its design tools with AI coding assistants.
The integration is designed to streamline workflows between design and development. Loredana Crisan, Figma’s chief design officer, noted that the integration allows teams to build on their best ideas, rather than just their first idea, by combining code with the creativity, collaboration, and craft of Figma’s infinite canvas interface. Alexander Embiricos, the product lead for Codex, explained how the tool bridges the gap between roles. “The integration makes Codex powerful for a much broader range of builders and businesses because it doesn’t assume you’re ‘a designer’ or ‘an engineer’ first. Engineers can iterate visually without leaving their flow, and designers can work closer to real implementation without becoming full-time coders,” Embiricos said.
The partnership builds on previous collaborations between the two companies. Figma was one of the first companies to launch an app in ChatGPT, doing so in October 2025. Previously, users could bring details from Figma design files, Figma Make, or FigJam into Codex for code-based implementation. OpenAI originally launched Codex last year as a command-line coding assistant. Later, the company built the coding tool into ChatGPT, and earlier this month launched a dedicated MacOS app for Codex. The MacOS app was downloaded a million times in its first week of release, and OpenAI reports that over a million users use Codex weekly.
Why it matters
Figma’s integration of OpenAI’s Codex enables a more fluid collaboration between designers and engineers by allowing them to move between design and coding environments using the Model Context Protocol (MCP).
